Background: Human Trafficking is widespread, hidden, organized and heinous crime against humanity. But it is still not viewed as heinous crime as rape or murder by public. Once a person fall preys to Human Trafficking, lost freedom of life, hope and dream. Life end up in abuse & exploitation.
While working with disadvantaged women, Talaash Association has come across the issues of Human Trafficking. Without legal, social or financial support, uneducated women and children easily become objects of exploitation and harassment. Poor and disadvantaged women and children are often trafficked for commercial sexual purposes. The victims are either abducted or enticed with promises of better life through good job or marriage offers and false proposals to visit holy places. The truth is that they fall prey to well-organized racket of traffickers.
In India, the reasons for human trafficking to be so widespread are poverty, unemployment, gender discrimination, economic vulnerability, unsafe migration, gender and power dynamics in the communities, early marriage & dowry, demand & supply of sex trade, religious taboo, inadequate institutional and community-based psychosocial protection and care systems, high ambition, insufficient laws and inadequate enforcements to prevent human trafficking.
As a result, victims are often exposed to isolation, fear and other forms of physical and mental torture and ill-treatment. The victims face extreme psychological stress ranging from trauma, depression and shame to severe psychiatric disorders as well as drug abuse and suicide. Emotional stress is usually accompanied by constant fear of arrest. Stigmatization by the society stops the victims from returning home and therefore they choose to stay in this hazardous environment. In addition, child prostitutes are at high risk of becoming infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and transmitting them to others through drug abuse and sexual contacts. Pregnancy and forced abortions under miserable and brutal conditions are another major problem that girls involved in prostitution and pornography face. Thus, human trafficking results in more serious human rights violation. India is still behind in providing psychosocial support to the victims of human trafficking, torture, sexual abuse and ill-treatment. The provision is hampered by a lack of understanding of the processes and the existing associated social stigma.
The government of India had taken initiative to provide holistic and comprehensive support to the victims of Human Trafficking and started to functionalize different activities in relates to prevention of Human Trafficking. NGOs along with government started addressing and providing services through different sort of activities.
Talaash Association has been combating human trafficking through prevention, protection, prosecution, partnership, rescue, repatriation, reintegration and rehabilitation. Apart from this, research, advocacy, networking and timely intervention is done to fight against this social evil. We have rescued more than 1765 victims of human trafficking and a large number of survivors have been repatriated to their homelands like Nepal, Bangladesh, Uganda and Sri Lanka.
